  • Although some South and Southeast Asian art artifacts existed in the collection previously, intense study and curatorial work regarding this collection did not begin until 1984. In that year, an expert in South Asian art arrived as Assistant Director of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery - Milo Cleveland Beach. Then, Carol R. Bolon was Assistant Curator, South and Southeast Asia and served from 1989 to 1994. Vidya Dehejia was Curator, South and Southeast Asia from 1994-2002. Dehejia also served as Chief Curator, Associate Director, Deputy Director, and Acting Director for a time before she left the galleries in May of 2002. Debra Diamond worked as a temporary assistant curator, 2000-2001, before accepting a permanent curatorship, 2001- . Emma Natalya Stein joined the museum in 2019 as Assistant Curator. Curatorial - South and Southeast Asian Art reports to the Chief Curator.
  • Curatorial - South and Southeast Asian Art is responsible for researching; publishing; lecturing; studying and translating texts, seals, and artifacts; and providing expert opinions on provenance, age, quality, and other significance of the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery artifacts of South and Southeast Asian art. Research and lectures take place both in these galleries and in other research sites in this country and abroad.
