Notes

  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.

  • Curatorial - Islamic Near Eastern Art was officially created in 1992. From 1944 to 1991, Islamic Near Eastern art curatorial activities were conducted by Curatorial - Near Eastern Art, in which Esin Atil was an Islamic Near Eastern Art curator and historian. The incumbent curator reports to the Chief Curator. Marianna Shreve Simpson was the first Curator of Islamic Near Eastern Art, 1992-1995. Massumeh Farhad became the Associate Curator in 1995 and in 2004 was appointed chief curator and curator of Islamic art.
  • The curatorial area of Islamic Near Eastern Art is responsible for researching; publishing; lecturing; studying and translating texts, seals, and artifacts; and providing expert opinions on provenance, age, quality, and other significance of the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery artifacts of Islamic Near Eastern art. Research and lectures take place both in these galleries and in other research sites in this country and abroad.
