  • When the Museum of African Art merged with the Smithsonian Institution in 1979 it included an educational component reporting to Amina J. Dickerson as Program and Education Director. In 1983 Edward Lifschitz became Curator of Education in the Department of Education and Research (from 1988, Department of Education). Veronika Jenke was appointed Assistant Curator of Education in 1987. Before or in 2007 the Department of Education became known as the Office of Education and Public Programs.
  • The Office of Education and Public Programs' mission is to strengthen global arts and humanities appreciation by helping to increase the understanding of the world's cultural and artistic traditions through the lens of African and its diasporas.
