Agency History

Notes

  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.

  • The Smithsonian Council was established in 1966 by Secretary S. Dillon Ripley, with the approval of the Board of Regents. Its members consist of 25 persons chosen by the Secretary for their distinguished achievements in various scholarly disciplines and in other fields. The Council advises the Secretary on programmatic endeavors as well as offering guidance on the progress of research and public education at the Smithsonian.
  • James M. Young was the first Coordinator and was succeeded by Marc Pachter in 1991. Neil G. Kotler served as Coordinator, 1992-2002. It appears that the Smithsonian Council ceased to exist after 2002.
