- Smithsonian Year, 1985-1995
- Elaine Heumann Gurian was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Museums, 1987-1990. In August 1990, Claudine K. Brown was named her acting successor, and in 1991 she was formally appointed to the position, which was renamed Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Arts and Humanities in 1992. Brown served concurrently as Director of the National African American Museum Project, 1990-1995. The position of Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Arts and Humanities was abolished upon Brown's retirement in 1995 and with the creation of the Office of Assistant Provost for the Arts and Humanities.
