  • The National Zoological Park, Department of Mammalogy was established in 1980. Before 1980, its tasks were carried out by the divisions of small mammals and large mammals in the Department of Living Vertebrates (1970-1972) and the Department of Zoological Programs (1972-1973), then by mammal units and curators in the Office of Animal Management (1973-1980). The Department of Mammalogy transformed into Exhibit Teams under the Department of Biological Programs in 1996. Edwin Gould was the curator of the Department of Mammalogy throughout its existence.
  • The Department conducted animal research and field studies on such topics as endangered mammals; breeding; reintroduction of captive mammals to the wild; animal behavior; and conservation efforts. They also trained students and collaborated with other NZP departments to pursue these studies.
