Notes

  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.

  • In 1995, Thomas W. Lentz became the first Deputy Director for the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. Prior to this, he was the Assistant Director, Research and Collections Division, which had a similar function to the Deputy Director. The Deputy Director oversees the Department of Education, Library, collection management, visual resources and Archives, Exhibition Coordinator, Publications Department, conservation and scientific research, and Chief Curator. Lentz left the position in 2000, at which time Vidya Dehejia succeeded him, 2000-2002. James T. Ulak served as Deputy Director from 2003-2010. After 2010, the Office of the Deputy Director appears to have been abolished.
