  • The Assistant Secretary for Communications and External Affairs oversees the Office of Public Affairs, Office of Government Relatons, the Office of Visitor Services, and the Office of Special Events and Protocol. Originally known as the Office of the Director of Communications in 1995, the office name changed to the Office of the Director of Communications and Public Affairs in 2002 and again in 2010 to the Office of the Director of Communications and External Affairs. In 2015, the office became known as the Assistant Secretary for Communications and External Affairs.
  • David J. Umansky was appointed the first Director and served, 1995-2002. From 2002 to 2015, Evelyn S. Lieberman served as Director. After the passing of Lieberman in December 2015, John K. Lapiana served as Acting Assistant Secretary, from 2015-2016. Julissa Marenco was appointed Assistant Secretary in 2017.
