- The position of Chief Technology Officer was created in 2000. The position was retitled the Chief Information Officer in a 2001 reorganization. The incumbent is responsible for directing all strategic and tactical decisions affecting the direction, planning, creation and operation of the Smithsonian's information technology infrastructure, telecommunications services, and support services and training. Dennis R. Shaw served as Chief Information Officer, 2000-2006. Ann T. Speyer started as Acting Chief Information Officer in 2006 and was made Chief Information Officer in 2007. Speyer left the Smithsonian 2011 and was succeeded by Deron Burba, 2011- .
