  • The Office of the Under Secretary for Science was created in 2000 to unify the Institution's scientific resources, foster cooperation, sharpen priorities, and to enhance the ability to employ at the collective level the same well-reasoned principles of organization that undergird good science at the individual level. Dennis O'Connor, formerly the Smithsonian's Provost, was appointed to the post and served, 2000-2002. Irwin I. Shapiro was Acting Under Secretary for Science, 2002, and was succeeded by David L. Evans, 2002-2007. Ira Rubinoff was Acting Under Secretary for Science in 2007, and was followed by Charles Alcock as Acting Under Secretary for Science in 2008. Appointed in August 2009, Eva J. Pell began her tenure as the Under Secretary for Science in January 2010 and served until 2014. W. John Kress served as Interim Under Secretary for Science until the Smithsonian administrative structure was revised and the position of Under Secretary for Science was replaced by the Provost and Under Secretary for Museums and Research in 2015
