  • The Office of Facilities Services (OFS) was created in 1979 from two predecessor offices: the Office of Facilities Planning and Engineering Services and the Office of Plant Services. In 2001, OFS was renamed the Office of Facilities Engineering and Operations (OFEO), and OFEO was renamed Smithsonian Faciltiies in December 2015. The Office is responsible for controlling and coordinating all aspects of the Smithsonian's physical plant, including design, restoration, construction, and maintenance.
  • Tom L. Peyton served as Director of the Office, 1980-1987, succeeded by Richard L. Siegle, 1987-1994. Robert P. Dillman was Acting Director, 1995; Richard H. Rice, Jr., was Director, 1995 (Acting), Director, 1996, and Senior Facilities Service Officer, 1997-2001, followed by William W. Brubaker, 2001-2012. Nancy J. Bechtol was appointed Director on July 1, 2012 and served until her retirement at the end of 2022.
