  • Silvio A. Bedini was appointed as the first Deputy Director of the National Museum of American History, then the National Museum of History and Technology, and served from 1972 to 1978. After a year's vacancy, Douglas E. Evelyn took the position and served until 1991. Spencer R. Crew served as Deputy Director (Acting) in 1992, followed by Martha M. Shannon, 1993-1994, and Deputy Director, 1995-2001. Dennis Dickinson was then acting Deputy Director, 2002. Susan Fruchter was Deputy Director from 2012-2020. Upon the departure of Fruchter in 2020, it appears that the Deputy Director position was abolished.
