  • Robert M. Sauer, the National Zoo's first pathologist, was appointed in 1968, and the Division of Pathology was created in 1971. It became the Office of Pathology in 1975 and the Department of Pathology in 1980. Richard J. Montali became chief of the Office in 1975 and served 1975-2004. Starting in 2006, Timothy F. Walsh was the supervisory pathologist until 2017. In 2018 Neel Aziz begain thier tenure as supervisory pathologist. The Department of Pathology manages the pathology program for more than 2,700 animals representing more than 390 species at the Zoo. By diagnosing animal illnesses, staff provide day-to-day consultations to the clinical programs of the Zoo's animal health section and the Smithsonian Center for Biology Institute's department of conservation medicine. These programs, along with animal care staff, are responsible for the health and husbandry of the collection.
