Notes

  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.

  • In 1972 Marilyn C. Johnson became the Associates' first Business Manager. From 1973 to 1975, Edward Able served in that capacity. In 1976 when the office was divided into National and Resident Associates Programs, Edward H. Able became Assistant Director for Administration for the Resident Associates, 1976-1977. How the National Associates Program may have dealt with its administrative needs is unclear. Wynn D. Hansen succeeded Able, 1978-1979. In 1980 Harry H. Bair was appointed Administrative Officer, followed by Eugene S. Szopa in 1980. Szopa was Assistant Director for Administration, 1982-1985, followed by Michael W. Cassidy, 1986-1988, and Associate Director for Administration, 1989-1992. When the Smithsonian Associates was created Cassidy was Assistant Director for Administration, 1992, and Deputy Director for Administration, 1993- . Meanwhile Crystal Fleary had become Accounts manager, 1987-1991. and was made Business Manager, 1992, Acting Assistant Director for Administration, 1993, Acting Associate Director for Administration, 1994, and Administrative Officer, 1995- .
