Agency History

Notes

  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.

  • It appears that the Smithsonian Associates had no staff member specifically identified as a public affairs specialist through 1975. When the office was separated into the Smithsonian National Associates Program and the Resident Associates Program in 1976, the National Associates appear to have continued in that way. The Resident Associates, however, appointed a Public Information Officer, Edward P. Gallagher. In 1977 he was succeeded by Helen Marvel, 1977-1983. In 1984 Deborah Cooney succeeded Marvel, and was in turn replaced by Karen Sagstetter in 1985. Joan Cole served as Public Information Officer, beginning about 1987 and continuing through the consolidation of the Associates programs in 1993, becoming the first Public Information Officer of the new organization. She served at least through 1997. Public Affairs duties were discharged by Maureen A. Snelling and Jacqueline H. Corbett, 2000- .
