Notes

  • This is an agency history. It does not describe actual records. The Smithsonian Institution Archives uses these histories as brief accounts of the origin, development, and functions of an office or administrative unit to set that unit in its historical context. To find information on record holdings, please double-click the highlighted field "Creator/Author", which will open on a brief view of relevant records.

  • The Southwest Meteor Spectral Patrol (SWMSP) was a meteor observing program carried out by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) to obtain spectral data during meteor showers. Funded under a National Aeronautics and Space Administration contract, SWMSP made observations at SAO's Organ Pass, New Mexico, and Wallops Island, Virginia, stations from 1968 through 1972. Claude Linton directed SWMSP from August to November 1968. Roy Proctor replaced Linton in November 1968 and remained in charge of the project until its termination in 1972.
