  • The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden's Office of Public Affairs is responsible for disseminating information concerning the Hirshhorn's various activities. To this end, it distributes many kinds of publicity, including press kits, news releases, and advertising spots. Target audiences include professional artists and critics, knowledgeable patrons, school children, and casual visitors.
  • Over the years, the Office of Public Affairs has been administered under the Publications and Information Services Department, the Department of Administrative and Museum Support Services, and the Public Programs/Curatorial Department. Sidney Lawrence was hired as the first public affairs staff member as a Museum Specialist (publicity) in 1976. His titles during his tenure have included Public Affairs Officer, and Public Information Officer, and Head, Public Affairs. Lawrence retired in 2003. From 2005-2007, Donna Drew Sawyer was Director of Communications and Marketing. Gabriel Riera was appointed Director of Communciations and Marketing in 2007 and served until 2011. From 2012-2014 Chris Wailoo served as Interim Director until Kelly Carnes was appointed Director, serving from 2015-2016. Allison Peck was then Director of Communications and Marketing from 2016-2018, followed by Hilary-Morgan Watt as interim Director from 2018 until 2019 when Kate Gibbs became Director.
