Consists of records documenting the administrative activities of the office during the tenure of Tom L. Freudenheim as Assistant Secretary for Museums, 1985-1991, Assistant Secretary for the Arts and Humanities, 1992-1994, and Assistant Provost for the Arts and Humanities, 1995. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, policy statements, collection inventories, reports, exhibition records, development records, loan reports, special exhibition fund records, collections acquisition fund records, budgetary materials, and personnel records. Records dated prior to 1985 were created by Paul N. Perrot, Assistant Secretary for Museum Programs, 1972-1983; and, William N. Richards, Acting Assistant Secretary for Museum Programs, 1983-1986.
