Consists of records documenting the administrative activities of the Office of the Under Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution during the tenures of Robert Angus Brooks; Michael Collins; Phillip S. Hughes; Dean W. Anderson; Carmen E. Turner; Alan Maxwell Fern; and Constance Ernestine Berry Newman. Materials include correspondence; memoranda; reports; informational files; legislation; policy statements; meeting minutes; and Institution-wide departmental and museum information. Records created prior to 1971 were created in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and in the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary during the tenures of John L. Keddy, James C. Bradley.
