The position of Associate Director for Research was created by Director Walter J. Boyne in 1983 to develop a center for the study of the history of aerospace science at the National Air and Space Museum, highlighting its role in research and technology. Paul A. Hanle was appointed to the new office. By 1986 he was in charge of educational planning, education, publications and special projects, volunteer services, and university programs. When Hanle left the Museum in 1987, the position was abolished.
