- The Deputy Director's office was created in 1991. At that time Marc Pachter left his position as the Assistant Director for History and Public Programs, and that post was eliminated. The programmatic aspects of his duties, along with those of the Assistant Director for Collections, were assigned to the new Deputy Director, and the remaining service responsibilities (of the Office of Publications and the Library) were assigned to the Associate Director for Administration.
- The Deputy Director has direct responsibility for the Curatorial Departments, which include the Office of Painting and Sculpture, Office of Prints and Drawings, and the Office of Photographs; the History Department; the Office of the Registrar; the Center for Electronic Research and Outreach; the Conservation Department; and the Education Department. In addition, the Deputy Director serves as Acting Director of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) in said Director's absence and serves as NPG's chief art historian.
- The primary functions of the Office were administered by Carolyn Kinder Carr, Assistant Director for Collections, 1984-1991, and Deputy Director, 1991-2011; and Marc Pachter, Assistant Director for History and Public Programs until 1990. After the retirement of Carr in 2011, the position of the Office of the Deputy Director was abolished.
