Consists of general correspondence with donors, researchers, and non-Smithsonian museum administrators concerning the acquisition of objects, exhibitions, museum programs, and research topics; letters and memoranda within the Department and between the various departments of the Museum concerning collections and exhibitions, Smithsonian publications, archaeological projects, seminars and lectures, and programs; and correspondence with non-Smithsonian museum curators, historical societies, university faculty, prospective donors, and the general public. Heads of the Department during this time period included Richard Hubbard Howland, Head Curator and Chairman, 1961-1968; C. Malcolm Watkins, Acting Chair and Chair, 1968-1973; Rodris C. Roth, Acting Chair, 1973-1974; Richard E. Ahlborn, 1975-1977; Anne Castrodale Golovin, Acting Chair, 1978; and Claudia Brush Kidwell, 1979-1980. Records predating 1969 were created by the Department of Civil History.
