Consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence with United States and foreign botanists; directors and botanists of United States and foreign herbaria and botanical gardens; museum directors; colleagues; friends; university professors; editors; and scientific societies concerning examination and identification of botanical specimens; exchange of specimen collections; explorations and collecting expeditions; requests for photographs, scientific publications; botanical research; reviews of monographs; professional societies; and personnel matters. Curators represented in these records include Ellsworth Paine Killip, Aid, Assistant Curator, Associate Curator, and Curator of the Division of Plants, and Head Curator of the Department of Botany, 1919-1950; Jason Richard Swallen, Head Curator and Chairman, 1950-1965; William Louis Stern, Chairman, 1965-1967; Mason E. Hale, Chairman, 1967-1970; Edward S. Ayensu, Chairman, 1970-1976; David B. Lellinger, Curator, 1991-2003; Dieter C. Wasshausen, Chairman, 1976-1982; and Robert B. Faden, Associate Curator, 1980-2014, and Emeritus Research Botanist, 2014- , and Maria A. Faust, Curator, 1973-2009, and Emeritus Microbiologist, 2009-2021. Materials predating 1947 were created by the United States National Museum, Division of Plants.
