Summary

  • Consists of records documenting the scientific careers and activities of Division of Grasses curators. Materials include incoming and outgoing correspondence with United States and foreign botanists; directors and curators of herbaria; agronomists; collectors of botanical specimens; seed laboratories; floral companies; United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Smithsonian Institution staff members; agricultural schools and agricultural experiment stations; colleagues; friends; publishers; and scientific societies concerning identification, examination, and reports on plants and grasses; exchange and transfer of specimens; gifts and loans of specimen collections; information regarding plants and grasses; explorations and botanical collecting expeditions; taxonomy; nomenclature; personnel matters; publications; departmental administrative matters; and professional activities.
  • Curators represented in these records include A.S. Hitchcock, and Agnes Chase while they worked for the Agrostology Section of the Bureau of Plant Industry, USDA, and the Division of Grasses. Records predating 1912 were created and maintained by the USDA.
