Consists of annual and quarterly status reports documenting research projects undertaken within the Department of Geology. Also includes miscellaneous research records, including correspondence, notes, papers, black-and-white photographs, and other materials created or collected by various Department of Geology and United States Geological Survey staff. Head Curators of the Department during this time period included George P. Merrill, 1897-1929; Ray S. Bassler, 1929-1948; William F. Foshag, 1948-1956; and G. Arthur Cooper, 1956-1963.
