- These records document the acquisition, maintenance, and scholarly study of the Museum's permanent collection and items that were later deaccessioned. Included are condition reports; donor receipts; correspondence offering, acknowledging, accepting, and confirming gifts; catalog entry sheets; purchase orders; invoices; copyright and licensing forms; reports recording exhibition and location histories; internal memoranda regarding the mechanics of maintaining objects; photographs; meeting minutes which note approvals of objects; credit lines for objects; acquisition questionnaires; curators' descriptions of objects; newspaper clippings; and exhibition catalogs.
- These records are maintained permanently at the National Museum of American Art, along with photographs of objects. Information on the latter may be found in record unit 5000102. Inactive loan files are transferred to the Smithsonian Institution Archives. For information about inactive loans, see record unit 453. NOTE: These papers are located in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
