Horton H. Hobbs, Jr., Papers, 1935-1993, with related material from 1900-1906
Horton H. Hobbs, Jr., (1914-1994), an invertebrate zoologist, received his Ph.D. in biology from the University of Florida in 1940 and taught there from 1937 to 1946. He joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1946 and served as Director of its Mountain Lake Biological Station from 1956 to 1960. Hobbs joined the staff of the United States National Museum in 1962 as Head Curator of the Department of Zoology. In 1964 he was appointed Senior Scientist in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology, National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), a position he retained until his retirement in 1984. At that time, Hobbs was given the title of Emeritus Zoologist while continuing his research on the taxonomy, ecology, and geographic distribution of freshwater decapod crustaceans.
This finding aid was digitzed with funds generously provided by the Smithsonian Institution Women's Committee.
The papers of Horton H. Hobbs, Jr., consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence primarily documenting his research on crayfish. Most of the correspondence was created during his career at NMNH, with smaller amounts from his days at the University of Florida and the University of Virginia. The correspondence is largely with professional colleagues and concerns the identification of specimens, preparation of scientific publications, field work, and professional matters. Also included is correspondence between Hobbs and students conducting doctoral programs under his supervision. The papers also include a few letters of the invertebrate zoologist, William Perry Hay, 1900-1906.
