Historical Note
Gordon B. Small, Jr., (1934-1989) received his B.A. degree from Bowdoin College in 1951, and his M.A. degree from Brown University in 1955. In 1962, he joined the Panama Canal Company as a mathematics instructor in their Department of Education in the Panama Canal Zone. Small remained in Panama until 1986, and he became an authority on the butterflies of the region. His butterfly collection of over 50,000 specimens was donated to the National Museum of Natural History.
Descriptive Entry
These papers consist primarily of notes, data sheets, and check lists concerning Small's research on the butterflies of Panama and the development of his collection. Also included is correspondence with colleagues, and a copy of a lecture on Panamanian butterflies. Some materials are in Spanish.
