Historical Note
Viola Shelly Schantz (1895-1977) served as a Biological Aide, Biologist, and Systematic Zoologist with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and its predecessor, the Bureau of Biological Survey, from 1918 to 1961. During her career she served as Curator of the North American mammal collection of the Bird and Mammal Laboratories housed in the National Museum of Natural History.
Descriptive Entry
This collection consists primarily of material concerning Schantz's retirement from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service including a citation for distinguished service presented to her by the Department of the Interior, 1962, and letters written to Schantz on her retirement in July 1961. Also included are photographs, including portraits and a group photograph taken at the annual meeting of the American Society of Mammalogists, 1962.
