Smithsonian Institution. Badianus Manuscript Project
In the early 1930s the Smithsonian Institution, in cooperation with Johns Hopkins University, undertook the project of reproducing the "Badianus Manuscript" located in the Vatican Library. The manuscript, an Aztec herbal, was composed in Aztec and Latin by Martin de la Cruz and Juannes Badianus in 1552. The Smithsonian withdrew from the project in 1937.
Materials consist of approximately 115 gouache copies by Marie-Therese Missonnier-Vuillemin of illustrations in the "Badianus Manuscript"; and a descriptive pamphlet by Emily Walcott Emmart concerning the "Badianus Manuscript," an Aztec Herbal, "Codex Barberini, Latin 24 (Vatican Library), 1935.
