Historical Note
William Lewis Dayton (1807-1864) was a Regent of the Smithsonian Institution from 1861 to 1864. He also served as a member of the New Jersey legislature, 1837; Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, 1838-1841; United States Senator from New Jersey, 1842-1851; vice-presidential candidate for the Republican Party, 1856; Attorney-General of New Jersey, 1857-1861; and Minister to France, 1861-1864.
Descriptive Entry
This scrapbook contains obituary notices from American and foreign newspapers on Dayton's death in Paris in 1864.
