Historical Note
In 1985 the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Museums was created. The incumbent was responsible for the central planning, coordination, and oversight of the Smithsonina Institution's museums. He was also to advise the Secretary on all museum-related policies and programs and to serve as principal liaison between the Smithsonian Institution and American and foreign museological organizations. Finally, he was to represent the Smithsonian in its dealing with federal agencies and foreign governments on museological matters. The first Assistant Secretary was Thomas L. Freudenheim, who served 1985- .
