Historical Note
Albert Meisel was appointed deputy director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (WWICS) in 1970 and held the position until 1973. In 1973 he served as acting director. In 1974 the title was changed to assistant director and Michael J. Lacey held the position until 1975. In 1976 the position of deputy director was established again, with assistant directors who had specific duties as part of their titles. George R. Packard served as deputy director from 1976 until 1979 when Prosser Gifford assumed the position. Gifford served 1979-1987. In 1987 he was also acting director until leaving the Institution in 1988, and Samuel F. Wells, Jr., became deputy director.
Descriptive Entry
These records consist of the files of George R. Packard and Prosser Gifford as deputy directors of WWICS. They consist of correspondence and reports concerning events, fundraising, and publications. Also included are records of financial contributions to the Center, 1971-1989.
