Historical Note
Prior to the establishment of the Development Office, fundraising was done by a variety of Cooper-Hewitt Museum staff including curators, administrators, and the director.

This finding aid was digitized with funds generously provided by the Smithsonian Institution Women's Committee.
Descriptive Entry
These records document the efforts of the Development Office to generate private financial support for Museum exhibitions from 1978 to 1990. Files were created for each exhibition and contain memoranda concerning possible sources of support and lists of potential donors; solicitation letters and correspondence with potential donors; information about corporate donors such as annual reports; promotional material and press releases for exhibitions; exhibition proposals and budget requirements; newspaper and magazine clippings about exhibitions; and funding summaries of donors solicited and their responses.
Records also consist of files for year-end appeals from 1983 to 1988, which include lists of donors, acknowledgment letters and other correspondence with donors; files for benefits held from 1982 to 1989 to raise money for the Museum, consisting mostly of copies of response forms; files documenting memorial funds established in honor of significant staff members or figures in design; and correspondence files with donors of $500 or less.
