Historical Note
The position of Special Assistant to the Secretary for Fine Arts was created in 1965. Thomas M. Beggs, who had served as Director of the National Collection of Fine Arts, 1948-1964, held the position until his retirement in 1965. He was charged with surveying American and foreign art museums concerning the development of contemporary art in this country.
Descriptive Entry
These records primarily consist of form letters answering Beggs' survey. Other records pertaining to this collection such as charters and annual reports have been dispersed in the National Museum of American Art and Portrait Gallery Library.
