Historical Note
Thomas R. Harney joined the staff of the Smithsonian Institution in 1969, as Science Information Officer to the News Bureau of the Office of Public Affairs. In this capacity he kept in touch especially with the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) to inform the public of research developments and new exhibitions through news releases and newsletter articles. In 1976 he became Writer-Editor at NMNH, still doing the same work. In 1990 he became NMNH's Public Information Officer.

These records were created and collected by Thomas R. Harney and primarily document exhibitions, research, and public programs at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). They include news releases, photographs, newspaper clippings, brochures, and related materials concerning permanent and special exhibitions at NMNH; a biographical information file containing photographs, notes, and published materials on NMNH staff; a subject file primarily concerning NMNH activities, but also containing materials regarding exhibitions at the National Air and Space Museum; 35mm color slides of NMNH exhibitions, staff, and events; and audio cassette tapes of press conferences and presentations at or about NMNH.
