Historical Note
The Office of the Under Secretary was created in 1973, and the incumbent reported directly to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and acted as his principal advisor. The first Under Secretary was Robert A. Brooks, who served until his death in 1976. Michael Collins served as the second Under Secretary from 1978 to 1980 and was succeeded by Phillip S. Hughes, 1980- .
Descriptive Entry
These records document the Under Secretary's involvement in all aspects of the Institution's operations from the perspective of a senior policy-maker, as well as contacts with governmental, corporate, and private bodies with which the Smithsonian interacted as it conducted its affairs. A few records deal with Brooks's work as Deputy Under Secretary and Assistant Secretary and with Collins's directorship of the National Air and Space Museum.
