Finding Aids to Official Records of the Smithsonian Institution Archives
Record Unit 354
National Air and Space Museum. Assistant Director for Development
Development Records, circa 1986-1989
Historical Note
Fund raising and other development activities of the National Air and Space Museum were originally the responsibility of the Office of Public Affairs, although both curators and upper management had long been involved by virtue of their contacts with the aerospace industry. A Membership and Development Officer, reporting to the Chief of Public Affairs, was first named in 1986 when Marilyn E. Lyons took the title. In 1987 Susan Beaudette, and in 1988, John M. Carlin, served in the position. Carlin's title was changed to Assistant Director for Development in 1989.
Descriptive Entry
These records document the work of the Development Office for the exhibition, "Beyond the Limits: Flight Enters the Computer Age," which explored computers and flight, and the Glennan-Webb-Seamans Project to establish a clearinghouse on sources for studying space history and to encourage scholarship in, and preservation of, these sources.
The records include correspondence and memoranda, lists of corporate and individual donors, plans for conferences and receptions, and reports on the projects. Also included is a folder on the Rowland Emett exhibition and material on fundraising software.
