Historical Note
The position of Associate Director for Research was created by Director Walter J. Boyne in 1983 to coordinate the creation at the National Air and Space Museum of a world center for the study of the history of aerospace science and to direct the new emphasis at the museum on research and technology. Paul A. Hanle, formerly Associate Curator of the Department of Science and Technology, 1976-1977; Curator, 1978-1979; Acting Chairman of the Space Science and Exploration Department, 1980; and Chairman of the Department, 1981-1983, was appointed to the new office. By 1986 he was in charge of Educational Planning, Education, Publications and Special Projects, Volunteer Services, and University Programs. When Hanle left the museum in 1987, the position was abolished.
Some of the projects undertaken during Hanle's tenure included the Space Telescope History Project, the Air and Space Bibliography, and the Smithsonian History of Aviation Project.
