Notes

  • The Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies was founded in 1974 as a division of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Through its fellowship program and special projects, the Institute helps to promote advanced research on Russia and the U.S.S.R. by scholars and qualified persons from government, industry, and the press. It is directed by an academic council which was established in 1975 under the chairmanship of George F. Kennan, former United States Ambassador to the Soviet Union. In 1975 S. Frederick Starr was appointed Secretary of the Institute and remained in the post until 1980. Abbott Gleason became the new Secretary at that time.
