Shipment Records, 1864-1940
These records include a list of packages announced as being sent to the Smithsonian Institution, listed and numbered in order of their announcement, and containing the following information when complete: transportation number, sender, origin, address sent to, how sent, date received, and expenses. The purpose was to control shipments of which the Smithsonian had been forewarned by letter or other means. The materials document the work of Stephen C. Brown, Registrar, 1880-1919; and Herbert S. Bryant, Chief, Division of Correspondence and Documents, United States National Museum, 1917-1948.
