Summary:

The accession record books list accessions of the United States National Museum in order of receipt. If the specimens are retained, the Registrar's control number assigned on receipt becomes the accession number. For the years 1859-1861, numbers begin anew each year. For the years 1859, 1860, and 1861, accession numbers begin anew each year. Beginning in 1862 numbers are sequential without regard to year.

Accession record books are a brief record of the main accession file, and with that file, are indexed by an alphabetical card index. In some cases, accession entries are duplicated in volumes. These materials document the work of Stephen C. Brown, Registrar, 1880-1919; and Herbert S. Bryant, Chief, Division of Correspondence and Documents, 1917-1948.
