Finding Aids to Official Records of the Smithsonian Institution Archives
Record Unit 100
Fiscal Records, Private, 1846-1959
The private funds of the Smithsonian Institution are those derived from non-federal sources. Over the years, these sources have included the original bequest of James Smithson and numerous other bequests and gifts from other benefactors. Private funds are managed separately from congressional appropriations, although both funds may at times support the same activities.
These records include daybooks, ledgers, receipts, journals, registers, statements, and other financial records documenting the management of the private funds of the Smithsonian.
