Abstract

This is the first of two notebooks containing a journal of an oyster survey of Louisiana conducted by the United States Bureau of Fisheries. It is includes entries for dates February 2 - 20, 1898. Entries include numbered measurements of temperatures, density, and depth as well as journal-style entries. These are listed by date and location and describe current oyster harvesting practices in the area; characteristics of observed oyster beds; ships used and types of vessels observed; descriptions and measurements of specimens of shells, oysters, and mussels collected and observed; effects of environmental conditions on oyster populations; sites of decreasing oyster populations; and details from interviews with oyster fishermen. Locations in Louisiana include the vicinity of Oyster Bay, Shell Island, Carajo [West Karako Bay], Ninemile Bayou, and Threemile Bayou.
