Abstract

This field book contains Stejneger's notes from his research on Robben Island (officially Ostrov Tyuleniy) and Iturup Island (officially Ostrov Iturup) in Russia. Pages are numbered 401 to 457. Stejneger's notes are narrative and describe his observations of, reflections on, and inspections of fur seals and the fur seal industry. Stejneger documents counting dead fur seal pups, places to observe seals, actions of seals at play, and gaurds protecting Robben Island from illegal sealing. He also describes his interactions with the Ainu people.
