Abstract

This field book contains Stejneger's notes from his research in Hakodate, Hokkaido in the northern region of Japan. Pages are numbered 501-559. Stejneger's narrative entries contain explanatory notes regarding the characteristics of different seal herds, seal migration patterns, and attitudes of local pelagic sealers on various issues including implementing a closed season for hunting. Also included is a timeline beginning 1877 of the number of seals and sea otters killed, the locations, and other notes regarding sealing for that year.
