Abstract

This folder is part of a collection of Waldo L. Schmitt papers. Schmitt was a carcinologist. He participated in many field trips and expeditions to observe crustaceans in the USA and around the world. Schmitt's last expedition was in 1962-1963, when he served as a member of the Palmer Peninsula (Antarctica) Survey of the United States Antarctic Research Program. During the survey, Schmitt collected over 29,000 specimens (crustaceans and other animals), which were added to the collections of the National Museum of Natural History. In recognition of his contributions to the United States Antarctic Research Program, the Board of Geographic Names designated a 30 mile ice-covered series of outcrops at the base of the Antarctic Peninsula, Schmitt Mesa. The folder includes: three leaves of lists of visited sites, a photocopy of a map of Palmer Peninsula, and three annotated maps. The maps are: a map of Mexico-Yucatan, Ascension and Espiritu Santo Bays from a British survey in 1839, published by the US Navy Hydrographic Office under the authority of the Secretary of the Navy, ed. 1923; part of a map (with a part cut and pasted) of an Antarctica strip chart of the U. S. Navy Hydrographic Office (5th ed. 1962); and a map of Ushuaia airfield, South America, to Berkner Island, Antarctica, also published by the U. S. Navy Hydrographic Office (5th ed. 1962).
