The field book is part of a collection of Waldo L. Schmitt papers. Schmitt was a carcinologist. During the summers of 1924 and 1925, Schmitt was at the Carnegie Institution's Marine Laboratory at Tortugas, Florida, surveying the crustacean fauna of the area, identifying crustaceans found in the stomachs of fishes, and taking underwater photographs. The field book consists on five loose typed leaves, with a title page that has the date 1925. In them, Waldo L. Schmitt relates a successful collection of various specimen of Crustacea, among them Bathynomus giganteus. He mentions the work conducted on the Dohrn, a vessel belonging to the Carnegie Institution that was used for this research. The study yielded the collection of a few less well known East Coast crustaceans like Nephropsis aculeate and Eusicyona brevirostris. Schmitt also records the observation of fish of the area, of which photographs were made.
