Abstract

This field book includes the field notes of geologist Louis Lamy Ray from 1938. The book, a Keuffel & Esser Co. graph paper book, is stamped on its cover with the title "Cross section 375 A"; it has tables for excavations and distances pasted as end papers. Louis L. Ray, who had studied in Washington University in Saint Louis and Harvard University, spent most of his career as a geologist with the United States Geological Survey. During 1936 and 1937, Ray participated in a Bureau of American Ethnology (BAE) excavation of Folsom Man ( a Paleo-Indian culture) artifacts at the Smithsonian Institution Lindenmeier site in Northern Colorado. The notes, which include drawings, are dated from July 1st to September 13th, 1938. They cover research conducted in Colorado, with mentions of meetings with other scientists such as Lugu in Lincoln, Nebraska, Schultz, and S. H. Knight in Wyoming. On the last pages in the book are noted names and addresses. The preliminary page is inscribed "Louis L. Ray, Geological Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. If lost, please return."
