Abstract

Field book of banding forms for field notes that are survey records on migratory birds specimens collected in Egypt for the Palearctic Migratory Bird Survey. From the finding aid (SIA RU000435): "The Palearctic Migratory Bird Survey (PMS), a survey of migratory birds, their ectoparasites and the viruses they carry, was conducted in the eastern Mediterranean from 1966 to 1971. The primary PMS operation site was in northern Egypt. Surveys were also conducted in Cyprus and Israel. The PMS involved scientists of the Smithsonian Institution, the United States Naval Medical Research Unit, and Yale University, and was funded by the Army Research Office, the Smithsonian Foreign Currency Program, and the Smithsonian Research Foundation. George E. Watson, Chairman, Department of Vertebrate Zoology, and Curator, Division of Birds, National Museum of Natural History, was Principal Investigator". Surveys were also conducted in Uganda. The banding forms are numbered 020-00278 to 020-00381 and dated from February 27 to March 16, 1967. They show the name of the bird species, band number, date and locality of capture and release, and data on sex (as determined by dissection, plumage, soft parts or otherwise), age (as determined from skull, plumage, soft parts or otherwise), weight, fat, molt (head, body, tail and wing), details, source (bought, PMS, NAMRU, other), method of collection (netted, lime, shot or other), parasites, banding recoveries, with additional remarks. A sheet was inserted in the folder with note "Checked against printout, retraps noted." A card tipped between 020-00293 and 020-000294 has notes: "Do not punch [...] Nov. 73" and "Do not allow 020-294 reference SI 18."
